I feel Java rocks because of its ease of use over years, where proactive market understanding of other competitors in the form of Python, Ruby On Rails, others, is involved and leverage of the same has kept itself relevant up and kicking. Java not only help built its own SDK but promoted ferociously its dependent partners like Spring, Struts, EJB, Javascript, JQuery and other IEEE conformant technologies. From being just a language, it has become a platform OS for all modern day web applications. Java/J2EE rules!!
These days we’ve modern day languages such as Scala and Groovy which are less verbose. I think it’s the openness which contribute to the popularity of Java. You name any need, you fill find a open source projects for it. Java itself is a open standard.
I think the newer languages like you mentioned have great influence on the maturity and enhancement of java day by day. Kotlin(https://kotlinlang.org/) is a nice fresh addition to the list of influencers 🙂 . JDK 9 features are definitely promising in terms of keeping up to the modern day slimmer and faster web apps.
